Pencarrow brush aside Grampound Road

Pencarrow's promising start to the 2012 season continued with a comprehensive 105 run at rivals Grampound Road on a cool, sunny day. Batting first, Pencarrow's opening pair problems continued, as Army Pioneers Captain John Howell, on debut, drove tamely to cover to fall for a duck, soon followed by Gareth Williams, who missed a straight ball from Jeremy Brewer for 7. The reliable middle order soon repaired the damage, as Nick Carter (19) and Oli Sleeman steadily accumulated runs before Carter mis-cued a drive to mid-on, giving the consistent Brewer his 3rd wicket. Vice captain Sam Millatt entered the fray at 4, determined to play straight on a wicket with seriously dubious bounce, as he and Sleeman put on a solid 39-run partnership before Millatt (20) was bowled by a shooter from the erratic Hindley. At 94-4, Pencarrow needed to rebuild, and returning stalwart Adam Phillips chipped in with a crucial 18, as he and Sleeman put on a vital 73-run stand before Phillips fell, soon followed by Sleeman for a fantastic 75, his highest score since returning to the club last season. The tail provided brief entertainment, as Cock (10) and Cook (11*) threw the bat with reckless abandon with useful knocks, before Brewer (5-43) cleaned up the hapless Tim Holland and James Gallagher for ducks with straight balls as Mark Wallis gleefully accepted 5 overthrows from an over-excited Jamie Caruana in the final over to allow Pencarrow to get up to 216-9. The other wickets went to Caruana (2-43) and Waters (1-35).

Grampound's reply was centred around the solid, staunchy veteran Steve Dunstan (49*), as he dropped anchor in an attempt to grind down the visiting bowling. As soon as the dangerous, agricultural Jamie Caruana fell to Wallis (3-33) for 2, and the out of sorts Chris Lawrence for 3 to the impressive James Gallagher (3-11), it was effectively game over. Grampounds alarmingly long tail was exposed, and despite valiant innings in the evening sun from P Craddock (15) and Hindley (18) Grampound never threatened to chase down the total, and seemed content to scratch along to their 2 batting points as they crumbled to 111 all out. The remaining wickets went to the spin twins, Sam Millatt (2-27 from 8) and Oli Sleeman (1-36 from 10) as the visitors 4-man attack operated well in tandem, despite some very dubious and lacklustre fielding from certain players. One bright spot was the excellent wicket-keeping of debutant John Howell. Pencarrow will hope to improve for next weeks clash with table-toppers St Neot II, an unknown quantity that have caught the division by surprise following their promotion last season.
